Strelok, production art

So the title of my fourth year film is Strelok, meaning "shooter" in Russian. Here is a rough layout and also some production art from my film.

Island In The Sun

This is what is fun about art, you can just create your own world or in this case, paradise.

4th Year

I am working on my 4th year film at Sheridan and here is some concept work. It is a very story heavy film inspired by Beksinski, Tarkovsky, Akira and the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games.

Alien Tree

Playing StarCraft II gave me a bunch of inspiration for sci-fi structures and planets. I kinda made this up as I went along in Photoshop with various texture brushes ... if you look closely there is a little space man looking for the tree of life or something.

Doug Stanhope

I'va been listening to Doug Stanhope's s stand up for a while and wanted to painted a caricature of the guy. I'm going to send it to him and see what he thinks. If you never heard of him look up some clips on youtube but that won't do him justice, listen to an album.

Update: I got to meet Doug Stanhope here in Halifax before his show, he was having a cigarette outside and I shyly approached him and started a conversation. After a few jokes back and forth about Halifax I told him I was the guy that did the painted caricature and he said he liked it and thought it was cool. I told him hes one of my heroes then he had to go into the club. He killed it that night at the club and I had a dopey grin on the whole time.

French me

Self-portrait although this is what I would look like if I was French or maybe painted by a Frenchmen.

Cave Troll

Just felt like painting something from scratch while I was waiting for my roommate. This took about an hour in PS.

Finally got a desk

Got a computer desk for my room so I can digi paint here in Halifax. This city is great, I love it.

New Sniper

I started a sketch at lunch, to get back into pencil drawing because I find this helps my digital painting draftsmanship in the long run, at least for me if I paint this now, I have a stronger design to work from than just straight ahead painting a character concept. I tweaked the sketch with the burn and dodge tool to bring out the line quality and shading.

In the grand scheme of things, next year is 4th year and I want to have a portfolio ready for the video game industry, tho the portfolio will be 3D character animation driven, I want to back it up with design.

WWII Soldier sketch

A texture portrait of a soldier, I wanted to do a study of a face so I used a photograph as reference.

Here are some doodles, one is an unfinished UPA style background, a lion speed paint and another is a cool cave man guy.

Third Year Film Backgroundss

This layout was drawn by the fantastic Mr. Chris, I did the underneath it, this layout was the most fun to paint.


Also this layout's foreground was penciled by Mr. Chris.

So yeah this year was quite the experience. I learned a lot about the group dynamic and about layout painting. The film's layout style was developed by me and Leon, whom, if you liked my stuff you should definitely see his because I was learning from him. Third year has helped me get friendlier with Adobe and has prepared me for 4th year where I will make a very layout heavy and dark film.

Dishboy

This is a character from my group's third year film, Dee did this awesome sketch and I just painted him. We all joked about how funny he would look in real life. :)

Colour fun

Painting the majority of the day with Leon, makes you want to paint more.

Firefall

Inspired by the really cool place, Horsetail Firefall in California, google it! The real place doesn't really have lava but I thought it would be neat if it was a lava fall coming out of the top.

walk in clouds

Started as a sky study, then I finished it with some trees and a couple, I know its cheesy but it was fun to do.

Film Layout

Did this as an example painted layout for my group film. There is going to be a character in the distance and a bowl dropping in the foreground.

Modern Ninja Design

I wanted to do some video game concept art, I came up with a stealthy ninja type character. This was a fun materials painting exercise, everything was painted from scratch in Photoshop. The silenced guns are based off of real weapons that are still used today. :D

Mr. Fox

Alex decided that I should finish this painting so I cleaned it up and rendered it a little more. Mr. Fox might be waiting for his date, I don't know he was in a hurry.

Kitchen Door

A test background I painted for my third year film.

Golden Landscape

No paintings in a while, I thought I'd get warmed up again, I looked at some artists I admire for inspiration and this just came out.

3D Robot Animation

A short animation I did with Ali Tezel's rig Spiderbot. The animation, lighting, sounds and set were done by me. The light post I found online somewhere but it was free to use.

Life Drawing

This is new, life drawing, I haven't ever posted this on the blog because I'm never really interested myself looking at other people's life drawings, but when life drawing and water colour collide then we're talking because the results are visually more rich.

3D Animation

Here are two clips of my 3D animation work all done in Maya 2010. I had a lot of fun making these and are really eager to get into a career of 3D animation. For my detail on this particular video go to the youtube page and read the youtube video description.

Action Analysis

My completed action analysis assignment for the 3rd year first semester. Here you can see this guerrilla man escaping the lab in which he was created by ripping off a heavy door and throwing it across the room. I had fun doing the sound design and animating this character, too bad I only had time for this short clip I think it would make a neat film if there were was some drama and fight scenes.

StopMo

A little bit of stop motion animation I did, there is a smash in there and a walk with some acting.
